Diplomatic Relations of Falmathion
Diplomatic Relations
Falmathian diplomacy is complicated by the fact that the Union can speak with twelve powerful voices and no dependable consensus. Foreign envoys may leave Oxyhold with a treaty signed by one faction, rejected by another, and interpreted differently by the Dragon Lord controlling the relevant border.
The current war has reduced that ambiguity. Most nations now view Falmathion as an expansionist threat.
National Ambition
The strongest expansionist bloc wants Falmathion to become the greatest empire on the continent and eventually dominate it. Supporters argue that dragons possess the lifespan, power, and knowledge required to rule lesser peoples. The war in Balthimore has given this belief territory, momentum, and military prestige.
Other Dragon Lords oppose reckless conquest without necessarily rejecting draconic supremacy. Falmathion's foreign policy therefore shifts between open imperialism, sacred justification, pragmatic trade, and internal sabotage.
Balthimore — Open War
Falmathion and Balthimore are fighting the War of the Forgotten Bones. The conflict began after a celestial draconic skeleton was discovered beneath Balthimore territory. When Balthimore refused to surrender the site, Falmathion invaded.
Falmathian forces now hold the excavation region and additional lands to the northwest. Official proclamations describe the campaign as sacred reclamation. The continuing advance increasingly resembles territorial conquest.
Frostfällt — Hostile by Proxy
Frostfällt sends soldiers and resources to Balthimore. It regards Falmathian expansion as a threat to continental stability and to a formal ally. Direct trade has diminished but continues through neutral brokers and the Farwing Exchange.
Falmathian propagandists portray Frostfällt as a foreign power interfering with a sacred draconic claim. Frostfälltian officials regard that claim as a pretext for aggression.
Halfor — Hostile by Proxy
Halfor supports Balthimore and opposes the invasion. Its advanced arcane and mechanical knowledge makes it a valuable wartime partner and a dangerous potential enemy.
Falmathion nevertheless covets Halforian technology. Smugglers, intermediaries, and politically protected merchants continue moving Halforian devices into Falmathian markets.
Dregor — Neutral and Commercial
Dregor maintains neutrality while trading where profitable. Its representatives avoid endorsing Falmathion's religious claims and resist formal alliance, but they have not accepted the economic cost of complete isolation.
Both sides watch the relationship carefully. Falmathion wants material access without political conditions; Dregor wants profit without becoming the next target of draconic ambition.
Dramor — Tense
Dramor and Falmathion maintain a tense relationship shaped by suspicion, limited trade, and incompatible strategic interests. Individual merchants and Dragon Lords still conduct business, but neither national government treats the other as dependable.
Falmathian expansionists speak of Dramor as a future obstacle. Dramor's leaders have noticed.
Grobion — Allied
Grobion is Falmathion's most enthusiastic ally. Grobion's appetite for warfare, chaos, plunder, and dangerous entertainment aligns readily with the Chromatic war effort. Grobion forces and irregulars can operate where formal Falmathian legions would create diplomatic complications.
The alliance is useful but unstable. Falmathian commanders do not fully trust Grobion troops to distinguish strategy from amusement, while Grobion has little interest in a future defined by orderly draconic rule.
The Averician Islands — Cautious Distance
The Averician Islands maintain guarded commercial contact. Their sailors value Falmathian reagents and fruit but are wary of draconic control over sea routes. Falmathian Bronze and Brass interests are more diplomatic toward the islands than the Council as a whole.
Religious Diplomacy
The supposed bones of Grandal have transformed theology into foreign policy. Any nation questioning Falmathion's claim risks being accused of insulting Grandal. Any nation accepting the claim risks legitimizing conquest.
Priests of Nazzurath and Syllanaxen outside Falmathion have urged investigation rather than annexation. Their caution is deeply unpopular with the Union's war faction.
The Diplomatic Problem
Other nations do not know whether a Falmathian agreement will survive the next council session, faction feud, or change in territorial control. Falmathian envoys therefore rely heavily upon personal oaths, magical contracts, hostages, marriage ties, and promises backed by a specific Dragon Lord's hoard.
The Union wants recognition as the natural center of draconic civilization. Increasingly, its neighbors see recognition as the first concession demanded by a future empire.
