The War of the Forgotten Bones

The War of the Forgotten Bones

The War of the Forgotten Bones is an ongoing conflict between Falmathion and the Crowned Realm of Balthimore. It began as a dispute over a celestial draconic skeleton and grew into an invasion whose outcome may redraw the political and religious order of Tazzurath.

The Discovery

An enormous draconic skeleton was uncovered beneath eastern Balthimore. The remains are ancient and radiate celestial power. Their skull rises like a watchtower, while their ribs curve through buried chambers like the vaults of a cathedral.

Falmathian priests and scholars connected the discovery to traditions concerning Grandal, the dragon god of good and order. Balthimore allowed a supervised investigation but granted no territorial rights.

Examination confirmed the age and celestial nature of the remains. It did not produce universally accepted proof of their identity. Nevertheless, the possibility that the bones belonged to Grandal transformed an archaeological discovery into a sacred and political crisis.

The Failed Petition

Falmathian authorities argued that remains of such importance required Falmathian stewardship. Their first petition asked for expanded access and religious custody. Later demands included the land surrounding the excavation.

Balthimore refused. Its government maintained that hospitality toward scholars did not surrender sovereignty and that no foreign power could acquire Balthimorean territory through an unproven religious claim.

Within Falmathion, calls for patience lost ground to leaders who argued that delay itself was sacrilege. Falmathion declared war and seized the excavation within the opening weeks of the campaign.

From Reclamation to Invasion

The operation did not stop at the bones. Falmathian forces occupied roads, settlements, defensive positions, and surrounding territory in order to secure the excavation. Each new position required another perimeter, supply route, and strategic height.

Balthimore mobilized its professional army, provincial levies, and local militias. What Falmathion described as sacred reclamation, Balthimore described as an unprovoked invasion by a nation previously welcomed onto its soil.

The conflict now extends through the eastern regions of Balthimore. Bruxlee is the principal battlefield, and pressure is moving toward the Crownspine.

The Coalition

Balthimore's defense is supported by several foreign powers:

  • Frostfällt provides troops, supplies, and specialists accustomed to severe conditions.
  • Halfor provides engineers and anti-dragon artillery.
  • Dramor provides intelligence and covert support.
  • Dregor maintains public neutrality while quietly assisting Balthimore.

Grobion supports Falmathion and stands against Balthimore's coalition. The war has therefore become more than a bilateral border conflict, even though most allied powers have stopped short of describing it as a continental war.

Leadership

Lord Protector Isaac Balthimore directs the eastern defense in his father's name. General Mara Halewyn serves as his principal battlefield commander. Their forces cooperate with elected communities in Tapland and with allied contingents operating under their own commands.

Falmathion's campaign draws strength from a rare unity among normally divided draconic interests. The sacred status attributed to the bones has allowed leaders with incompatible ambitions to fight beneath a common justification.

The Current Front

Falmathion controls the excavation and adjacent occupied territory. Balthimore continues to resist but is slowly losing ground. Dragon attacks, fortified positions, strained supply routes, displaced civilians, and the need to defend multiple approaches have exhausted the eastern army.

Dawngate Keep protects the most important passage through the Crownspine. If the line at Bruxlee collapses, the fighting may reach that mountain barrier and threaten western Balthimore directly.

Why the Bones Matter

To many Falmathians, the remains may be the holiest relic discovered in generations and evidence that divine history has entered the present age. To Balthimoreans, whatever their identity, the bones lie within sovereign land and cannot justify conquest.

No public investigation has resolved the disagreement. War, occupation, damaged records, competing faiths, and the immense political cost of being wrong now make impartial study nearly impossible.

Living With the War

In eastern Balthimore, the conflict shapes every journey and meal. In the west, it is discussed through official reports, patriotic ceremonies, casualty notices, rumors, and carefully managed accounts from distant fronts. In Falmathion, sacred duty, political ambition, grief, and doubt compete to define what victory would mean.

The war began with the question of who should guard the bones. It now asks a far larger question: how much land, truth, and life can be sacrificed before guardianship becomes possession?
