The Crowned Realm of Balthimore

The Crowned Realm of Balthimore

Balthimore is a country divided by the Crownspine and united by the belief that it must never appear divided. In the west, green highlands descend toward prosperous ports, noble estates, tournament fields, and workshops famous for making daily life beautiful and comfortable. In the east, shattered towns, elected frontier councils, coalition armies, and exhausted militias resist the advancing forces of Falmathion.

The Crowned Realm presents itself as the perfected image of a chivalric kingdom. Gold-and-crimson banners fly above terraced Eschbron. Celebrity knights perform heroic contests before cheering crowds. Fine furniture, indoor plumbing, elegant household devices, and courtly theater carry Balthimorean prestige across Tazzurath. Yet the closer one travels toward the southeastern frontier, the more that magnificent image gives way to requisitioned roads, abandoned farms, artillery positions, and dragonfire.

Geography

Western Balthimore resembles the romantic image painted in its own illuminated histories: temperate forests, broad meadows, highland farms, orchard valleys, old stone bridges, and estates overlooking the sea. Eschbron occupies a terraced western coast whose harbors connect the realm to international trade.

The Crownspine rises through the center of the country. Its severe peaks, violent storms, monsters, unstable trails, and high-altitude wilderness form a more reliable barrier than walls. Heisinwand and Caprania occupy its approaches, while Dawngate Keep protects the most important military passage.

Beyond the range, the land becomes progressively more damaged. Chessla and the free communities of Tapland support the eastern resistance. Bruxlee has become the primary battlefield. Closer to Falmathion, cultivated country gives way to burned settlements, fused stone, ruined temples, military roads, and territory whose ownership may change several times in one season.

Peoples of the Realm

Humans and elves constitute roughly three quarters of Balthimore's population. The remaining quarter includes dwarves, halflings, gnomes, dragonborn, orcs, and many other peoples whose communities have become part of the realm through conquest, migration, trade, and reconstruction.

National identity is stronger than any single ancestry, but noble birth and wealth still determine opportunity. Ancient houses dominate land and government, while prosperous guild families purchase influence through trade, finance, craftsmanship, and service to the crown.

A Realm of Two Realities

Western Balthimore remains prosperous enough to believe in tournaments, festivals, diplomatic deployments, and distant acts of heroism. Its citizens nevertheless live with unanswered questions: unusual taxes, relatives who remain abroad for years, guarded mountain routes, and shortages no peacetime explanation quite resolves.

Eastern Balthimore has no such distance from war. Lord Protector Isaac Balthimore commands the defense from a network of fortified settlements, war councils, and elected local governments. His soldiers call him the Uncrowned King, a title of loyalty rather than an announced challenge to his father.

The two halves still consider themselves one people. Families, faith, history, and the crown bind them together even as the Crownspine prevents them from sharing the same daily truth.

The War of the Forgotten Bones

The war began when an enormous celestial draconic skeleton was discovered beneath eastern Balthimore. Falmathian scholars received permission to study it, then claimed it could be the remains of Grandal. When Balthimore refused to surrender the sovereign territory surrounding the excavation, Falmathion invaded.

Falmathian forces hold the excavation and several adjacent territories. Balthimore's coalition is slowly losing ground despite Halforian artillery, Frostfälltian troops and supplies, Dramoran assistance, and discreet support from Dregor. The principal line now runs through Bruxlee toward the Crownspine.
