Economy and Trade of Balthimore

Economy and Trade

Balthimore's western economy transforms ordinary comfort into an international luxury. Its most successful exports are not jewels or enchanted weapons, but the objects that make a wealthy home feel civilized: furniture, pipes, pumps, toilets, washrooms, ventilation systems, kitchens, fittings, and beautifully engineered utilities.

The war has placed this prosperous economy under severe strain. Western workshops continue producing prestige goods while eastern armies consume metal, timber, medicine, food, and credit faster than the realm can replace them.

Sterling

Balthimore uses a decimal currency organized around the Sterling.

  • 100 Cents = 1 Sterling
  • Nickel = 5 Cents
  • Dime = 10 Cents
  • Quarter = 25 Cents
  • Ten Sterling = 10 Sterling
  • Hundred Sterling = 100 Sterling

Cents, Nickels, Dimes, and Quarters circulate as durable coins. Sterling may appear as larger coins, certified notes, or bank instruments depending upon value and location. Ten and Hundred Sterling notes are common in trade, banking, estate purchases, and military contracts.

Fine Furniture

Balthimorean furniture combines skilled joinery, carved decoration, comfort, and mechanical ingenuity. Important exports include:

  • Writing desks with concealed compartments
  • Modular shelving and archive systems
  • Beds with integrated storage and warming channels
  • Folding tables and campaign furniture
  • Upholstered chairs designed for long use
  • Washstands connected to household water systems
  • Matched noble room sets carrying workshop marks

The finest pieces can be disassembled, shipped, and rebuilt without permanent damage, making them attractive to embassies, traveling courts, and wealthy adventurers.

Plumbing and Domestic Utilities

Balthimorean engineers install gravity-fed water, pressure pumps, indoor toilets, drainage, heated washrooms, ventilation, cisterns, and mechanical kitchen systems. Most designs rely upon sound physical engineering rather than powerful magic, which allows workshops to export their methods.

Access within Balthimore is unequal. Palaces, temples, guild halls, noble estates, and wealthy urban districts enjoy excellent facilities. Working districts may share public pumps and bathhouses, while rural homes rely upon simpler systems.

The Frostfällt Problem

Balthimorean plumbing reliably fails in Frostfällt. Pipes freeze even when insulated, heated, buried, enchanted, or installed during summer. Balthimorean engineers blame Frostfälltian runes. Frostfälltian engineers blame Balthimorean assumptions. Neither country has produced an explanation that survives testing.

The failure has become an international joke and a professional obsession. Every few years another confident master plumber travels north promising to solve it.

Other Industries

  • Textiles and upholstery: Wool, linen, dyed cloth, cushions, and household hangings
  • Shipbuilding: Merchant vessels, coastal transports, and fitted interiors
  • Metal fittings: Pumps, valves, hinges, locks, pipes, kitchen tools, and architectural hardware
  • Food and drink: Cider, estate wine, cheese, preserved fish, orchard products, and baked goods
  • Books and theater: Illustrated romances, household manuals, architectural plans, and performance rights

Eschbron and Kapenport

Eschbron is the financial and cultural center of western trade. Its terraced harbor receives imported timber, metal, spices, glass, and raw materials, then exports finished goods of much greater value.

Kapenport handles bulk cargo, naval provisioning, and less prestigious trades that Eschbron's noble waterfront prefers to keep at a distance. Together the two ports allow Balthimore to sustain overseas commerce despite the Crownspine and eastern disruption.

Wartime Finance

The war depends upon heavy taxation, crown bonds, domestic banks, noble fortunes, merchant credit, and assistance from foreign partners. Public accounts offer only a broad picture of the realm's total obligations.

Official budgets describe much of this spending through allied defense, foreign deployments, infrastructure security, maritime protection, and emergency credit. Interest payments increasingly shape taxation and royal policy.

If confidence in the crown's ability to repay were to fail, Balthimore could face bank runs, worthless notes, seized estates, interrupted military shipments, and severe foreign pressure.

Labor and Class

Master craftspeople enjoy unusual prestige but remain dependent upon guild membership, noble contracts, and access to capital. Apprenticeships can create limited social mobility. Ownership of workshops, forests, shipping, and patents remains concentrated among wealthy families.

Eastern workshops operate differently. Furniture makers build field hospitals, engineers repair artillery, and plumbers create sanitation systems for refugee camps. Skills once associated with luxury have become necessary for survival.

Trade Relations

Frostfällt purchases furniture and mechanical designs despite the plumbing rivalry. Halfor exchanges advanced components, artillery technology, and engineering knowledge. Dramor and Dregor provide discreet channels for information and goods. Trade with Falmathion has largely collapsed, though smugglers and neutral intermediaries continue profiting from the conflict.
