Military and Defense of Balthimore

Military and Defense

Balthimore maintains two very different military cultures. Western tournament orders perform the image of chivalry. Eastern soldiers conduct a war against dragons, Falmathian legions, Grobion raiders, magical artillery, and a front that moves closer to the Crownspine each year.

Command

Lord Protector Isaac Balthimore holds supreme operational command in the east. His orders are issued in King Edric's name and coordinated through a war council of professional officers, allied commanders, regional officials, and elected local delegates.

General Mara Halewyn serves as Isaac's principal Balthimorean commander. Common-born and promoted through artillery service, she represents the eastern belief that competence must outweigh pedigree when a failed decision costs towns.

Military Structure

The Professional Army

Career infantry, archers, cavalry, engineers, medics, scouts, and artillery crews form the core of the defense. Years of war have created experienced officers whose authority rests upon survival and results rather than tournament reputation.

Provincial Levies

Regions provide troops according to population, resources, and royal obligation. Levies receive formal training before entering the east, though wartime shortages often shorten that preparation.

Local Militias

Freehold and other frontier communities maintain their own defenders. Militias know local roads, ruins, shelters, and seasonal dangers better than national units. They cooperate with Isaac while retaining elected leadership.

Tournament Orders

Western knightly orders possess equipment, money, horses, and fame but little current combat experience. Some individuals leave the tournament circuit for genuine service and discover that their public skills translate poorly to artillery warfare and aerial attack.

Halforian Anti-Dragon Artillery

Halfor supplies arcane-mechanical weapons, targeting instruments, heavy ballistae, specialized ammunition, and engineers. These systems allow Balthimore to contest Falmathian air superiority around forts and prepared battlefields.

Artillery crews conceal weapons, coordinate overlapping fields of fire, and wait until dragons commit to an attack. A single premature shot can reveal an entire position.

Coalition Forces

Balthimore's allies participate directly in the war:

  • Frostfällt deploys soldiers, runic defenses, weapons, medicine, and cold-weather expertise in the Crownspine.
  • Halfor supplies artillery, engineers, maintenance crews, and technical training.
  • Dramor specializes in intelligence, spies, infiltration, codebreaking, and information gathered behind Falmathian lines.
  • Dregor remains publicly neutral but channels covert aid to Isaac.

The coalition has prevented rapid defeat. It has not yet reversed the invasion.

The Bruxlee Front

Bruxlee is no longer a normal civil territory. Its towns have become fortifications, supply depots, ruins, artillery positions, and temporary hospitals. Roads are rebuilt after bombardment and abandoned when enemy dragons learn their routes.

The front is fragmented rather than continuous. Patrols, isolated forts, resistance cells, occupied villages, monsters, and mobile Falmathian forces create large areas controlled by no one after sunset.

Dawngate Keep

Dawngate guards the most important reliable passage through the Crownspine. The fortress coordinates mountain patrols, stores coalition supplies, protects civilian evacuation routes, and anchors the final prepared defensive line before the western realm.

If Bruxlee and Chessla fall, Dawngate becomes the decisive barrier between Falmathion and Eschbron.

The Broken Choir

This ruined temple complex lies near the shifting frontier. Voices emerge from its shattered sanctuaries after battles, sometimes warning of danger, reciting unknown scripture, or speaking names no living soldier recognizes. Both armies avoid occupying it permanently.

Eastern scouts still enter when the voices offer information unavailable anywhere else.

Current Situation

Balthimore is slowly losing. Its coalition holds major positions at enormous financial and human cost, but Falmathion can replace fortifications quickly and continues pressing northwest. Every season consumes experienced soldiers who cannot be easily replaced.

Isaac's strategy is to delay, preserve civilian life, trade territory for time when necessary, and prepare the Crownspine for the assault many officers believe is inevitable.

Public Honor

Real soldiers are privately revered rather than nationally celebrated. Families keep service tokens, maintain empty places at important meals, and tell stories only among trusted company. Official ceremonies often describe deployments as allied peacekeeping, foreign defense, or distant service.

The east does not fight for western applause. It fights because the mountains are behind it.
