Western Balthimore
Western Balthimore
Western Balthimore is the realm depicted on tapestries and tournament posters: green hills, highland keeps, prosperous ports, ancient forests, flowering estates, and crimson banners stirring above gray stone. Its wealth and stability are real. So is the quiet unease beneath them.
The Western Provinces
Eschbron
The province surrounding the capital holds the royal estates, the western court, major banks, the Triune Basilica, and the largest concentration of luxury workshops in the realm. The city of Eschbron rises in terraces above a busy coastal harbor. Its fashionable avenues and public gardens present a carefully maintained image of national confidence.
Schaldenia
Schaldenia is a country of wooded highlands, grazing land, rain-dark stone, and noble estates. Its principal city, Schalden, is known for tournament culture and the households that train, sponsor, and celebrate professional knights. Rural communities remain closely tied to older obligations of land, harvest, and local patronage.
Kapenwia
Kapenwia follows the milder western coast around Kapenport. Shipyards, import houses, furniture workshops, warehouses, and merchant guilds give the province a practical character beneath its ornate architecture. Much of Balthimore's overseas trade passes through its harbors.
Major Cities
Eschbron
With approximately 150,000 residents, Eschbron is Balthimore's largest city and political center. The royal estate, Belladon Gardens, the Triune Basilica, ministries, banking houses, theaters, guild halls, and terraced residential districts crowd the slopes above the harbor.
Schalden
Schalden is the ceremonial heart of western chivalry. Its tournament grounds draw famous knights, noble patrons, merchants, performers, gamblers, and spectators from across the realm. The city also supplies horses, armor, banners, and the many specialists required to turn combat into spectacle.
Kapenport
Kapenport is the realm's busiest commercial harbor outside Eschbron. Warehouses and shipyards dominate the lower city, while manufacturers and merchant residences climb the surrounding hills. Its craftspeople are especially noted for fine furniture and compact mechanical household systems.
Highcourt
Highcourt stands where the western roads begin their ascent toward the Crownspine. Courts, administrative colleges, officer schools, and old fortified estates make it a center of law and provincial government. Travelers heading east are questioned, registered, and advised before continuing into the mountains.
Daily Life
Life in the west is shaped by status. Noble households occupy the most fertile estates and influential offices. Wealthy guild families compete through patronage, education, elaborate homes, and marriage. Craftspeople and laborers benefit from thriving cities but face taxes and social barriers that wealth alone cannot always remove.
Mechanical conveniences are common in elite and prosperous urban homes. Pumps move water to upper stories. Enclosed toilets, heated bathing systems, speaking tubes, counterweighted lifts, and ingenious kitchen devices allow wealthy households to display comfort as a form of power. Working districts usually share simpler pumps, bathhouses, and public facilities.
Markets and feast days remain lively despite wartime shortages. Court theater, religious processions, garden concerts, and tournaments offer a rhythm of public celebration. The result can feel genuinely joyful and faintly unreal at the same time.
Knights of the Lists
Western tournament knights are athletes, performers, heraldic personalities, and commercial celebrities. Successful competitors retain trainers, armorers, healers, heralds, and agents. Their rivalries are followed throughout the realm, and children imitate their salutes with wooden swords.
Some have genuine military experience, but tournament success is not the same as surviving the eastern front. Professional soldiers returning from the Crownspine are therefore treated with a different, quieter reverence—especially among families with relatives serving abroad.
The Quiet Anxiety
Westerners know that a major war is being fought in the east, but distance and controlled travel make its scale difficult to comprehend. Official reports emphasize coalition duty, strategic patience, and heroic service. Daily evidence is harder to reconcile: higher levies, delayed ships, absent relatives, guarded roads, and veterans reluctant or unable to describe where they have been.
Rumors flourish in the gaps. Some claim the fighting is nearly won. Others insist a single decisive victory will solve everything. Many people choose not to examine contradictions too closely, fearing what the answers could demand of them.
Faith and Public Life
The formal triad of Grandal, Nazzurath, and Syllanaxen frames civic ritual. Grandal is invoked at dawn, coronations, and acts of public courage. Nazzurath receives prayers concerning memory, death, endurance, and judgment. Syllanaxen is honored in craft, learning, transformation, and the ordered mechanisms of daily life.
The Triune Basilica sets official observances, though household practice varies widely. Public religion is closely intertwined with crown ceremony, charitable relief, and the legitimacy of government.
Traveling West
Visitors encounter maintained roads, regular toll stations, formal inns, active markets, and strong local law. Proper papers matter, particularly near Highcourt or any Crownspine route. Displays of uncontrolled magic, monstrous ancestry, or supernatural transformation may attract regulation and suspicion even when no crime has occurred.
The western realm is neither an illusion nor a simple lie. Its beauty, generosity, and prosperity are part of Balthimore. They have simply been protected from the full price being paid beyond the mountains.
