Infrastructure and Technology of Balthimore
Infrastructure and Technology
Balthimorean technology is designed around the human body and the inhabited room. Where Frostfällt builds national magical networks and Halfor pursues arcane machinery, Balthimore excels at making homes, estates, inns, hospitals, workshops, and civic buildings more comfortable through precise mechanical design.
Its finest technology is widely exported but unevenly distributed within the realm.
Water and Plumbing
Balthimorean systems use gravity, pressure, pumps, valves, cisterns, filters, drains, and replaceable pipe sections. Minor magic may purify a reservoir or heat an elite bath, but a properly designed system functions without constant spellcasting.
Wealthy buildings commonly include:
- Indoor toilets and connected waste channels
- Running cold water and limited heated water
- Kitchen pumps and washing basins
- Roof-fed rainwater cisterns
- Ventilated drains and sealed traps
- Maintenance passages allowing repairs without destroying walls
Public systems serve fountains, bathhouses, hospitals, markets, and dense urban districts. Rural communities often use communal pumps or simplified estate networks.
Sanitation
Plumbing is more than a luxury. Balthimorean military and civic engineers understand that separated waste, clean water, ventilation, and washable surfaces prevent disease. Eschbron maintains street drains, refuse schedules, public privies, and harbor channels whose gates use the tide to clear accumulated waste.
Eastern engineers apply the same knowledge to refugee camps and field hospitals. Portable latrines, water filters, folding washstands, and drainage plans save as many lives as some battlefield spells.
Furniture and Interior Engineering
Balthimorean workshops design furniture as infrastructure. A room should support the work performed within it and allow damaged pieces to be repaired rather than discarded.
Common innovations include modular cabinets, folding tables, adjustable chairs, mechanical dumbwaiters, fitted kitchens, wall beds, document storage, lockable compartments, and campaign furniture that travels with armies or diplomats.
Heating and Ventilation
Western homes use masonry stoves, flues, shutters, vents, insulated curtains, and heat-retaining tile. Coastal buildings emphasize airflow and moisture control. Mountain structures use compact rooms, deep foundations, and shared heating walls.
Frostfälltian heating magic is more powerful, but Balthimorean systems are easier to repair without a mage.
The Unsolved Frostfällt Failure
No Balthimorean plumbing system functions reliably in Frostfällt. Water freezes in heated buildings, protected pipes, summer installations, and designs copied directly by local craftspeople. Tests have blamed pressure, metal, groundwater, ambient magic, rune resonance, installer pride, and divine humor.
The failures have never produced a consistent explanation. Frostfällt continues ordering selected components, and Balthimore continues sending experts who promise that this attempt will be different.
Roads and Travel
Well-maintained western roads connect estates, towns, Eschbron, Kapenport, and Schalden. Coach travel, freight wagons, riding horses, river barges, and coastal ships are common.
The Crownspine breaks that network. Only a small number of maintained routes cross its deadly wilderness, and even those close during storms, monster migrations, avalanches, or military emergencies. Dawngate controls the most important passage.
Eastern roads prioritize artillery, food, refugees, and military movement. Routes are frequently concealed, destroyed, rerouted, or rebuilt.
Communication
Western Balthimore uses couriers, postal coaches, semaphore towers, harbor signals, printed notices, and limited magical messaging. Noble houses and merchant guilds maintain private courier networks.
Wartime communication in the east relies upon coded dispatches, allied magical relays, runners, signal lamps, trained birds, and Dramoran intelligence channels. Messages crossing the Crownspine face delays and extensive security review.
Education and Technical Training
Guild apprenticeships provide most practical education. Eschbron supports royal academies for architecture, law, administration, navigation, medicine, and the domestic arts. Halforian engineers increasingly train Balthimorean artillery and maintenance crews in eastern workshops.
Access remains unequal. Noble children receive broad education; guild families train successors; rural citizens depend upon temples, village tutors, or military service.
Limits
Balthimore can equip a palace with remarkable comforts but cannot provide them equally to three million people. Its systems depend upon skilled maintenance, stable supply chains, and standardized fittings. The war disrupts all three.
Its greatest engineering problem is no longer how to bring water into a noble home. It is how to keep roads, hospitals, sanitation, and artillery functioning while the eastern half of the country is being dismantled.
